The concept of the ecological footprint has been launched by the Swiss professor Wackernagel. It is expressed in hectares (1 hectare = 2471 acres). An individual's ecological footprint represents the amount of earth surface one needs, or uses, to live, work, eat, generate energy, dispose domestic waste, ...
Given the fact that only 18% of the surface of the earth can be used by humans (as the rest is desert, ice, ...), every human on the planet can only use 1.8 hectares on average to sustain himself without compromising the rest of the world population. If we want to leave some space for our fauna and flora as well, every human's share is even lower than that. The average ecological footprint per individual - worldwide - in 2001 was 2.2 hectares - or 21% more than what is available. Sounds bad, but not too bad, does it?
Unfortunately (as we all know), the use of land is not distributed equally among all people of the world. Among other things, the hunger for energy and fossile fuels and the immense production of waste in our beloved industrialized countries dramatically increases the ecological footprint of its inhabitants. The ecological footprint of an average Belgian citizen is 5.6 hectares, or over 3 times more than what's available. The ecological footprint of an average North American is almost 10 hectares (source: WWF.) Imagine what would happen when all developing countries start living according to American or European standards...
Yesterday, I calculated my own ecological footprint at iedereeneco.be (see image below, the yellow bars are the Belgian averages). It seems that the efforts we have been doing as a family during the last few years pay off, as my ecological footprint is "only" 2.8 hectares, about 50% of the Belgian average. In our household, we have quite stringent waste management control rules, we pay higher energy bills for having green electricity (I guess the additional cost is something like an iPod a year), ...
We perform relatively poorly in the food department, mainly because we don't pay too much attention to where our food comes from. A lot of fruit and vegetables are imported from the other side of the world, which leads to high energy consumption for transport. So our 2008 goal is to increase the amount of locally produced foods in our shopping basket. I won't get the Nobel prize for doing so, but I think it's worth it nonetheless :)
I think that 18% figure needs to be repeated more often - especially when considering that it will be significantly lower when considering vegetation. Thanks for posting this reminder. I'm going to check out my footprint too.
Some very interesting information and I do agree with Malaleuca that the 18% figure is a bit askew. And thanks for sharing the calculation tool, will definitley pass this on!
I think that the statement "only 18% of the surface of the earth can be used by humans"is inaccurate...:)
It's way too low
Too much Kevin Costner's Water world I feel. :)
Very interesting article.
I agree, this is certainly a very informative article! Thanks for sharing...
Hey, Pete here.
Interesting "observation" (uh-oh Pete's using a bog word)
In my own experience of quitting (I managed to quit quite easily -- BOOYAH! after using something which I won't explain here) I think it's important to realise...
And admit to yourself that you actually DO have a fear of not smoking.
The second thing that is VERY VITAL to this is to actually put in the effort...
By this I mean make a goal and then STICK TO THE GOAL. FORGET about patches, gum, hypnosis, therapy and all this other crap...
I think the real secret is...
Admitting you have a problem, putting in some hard work, setting a pratical goal and then working towards it is how you will quit...
It's how I quit. Ok I think my comment is getting a little long long but one more thing...
LET'S TAKE DOWN THIS NICOTINE SON OF A GUN!
haha I'm in a weird mood aren't I...
Pete ;)
Oh yeah, visit my site...
I have a 96% success rate in helping people quit so yeahhh... http://QuittingMadeEasy.com/
Everybody needs to do their part to reduce their ecological footprint. But I think most everyone will wait till the last minute, when it may be too late, to actually make changes needed to preserve our earth.
Could you please explain me the meaning of 'DOM'

Thanks for the great information.
Great article, it certainly puts things into perspective!
I agree, this article does a great job explaining the whole concept. Thanks!
This was a very infomative article and I would recommend this article to anyone that is intrested in trying to get the "fix" fixed :)
Great Post! This Post gives me something to think about.
I still find it interesting how some people require much more space than others.
Quiting is not easy at all. Its proably that hardest things to do in life. However its a smart thing too do if you want to live a longer life. You wont get sick as often as well.
Some is some great information. I don't think many people are aware of this!
Very interesting article! The people who live in Foxtrail are very interested in reducing their ecological foot print.
I really like the thought put into this article. The people who live in Foxtrail are very interested in reducing their ecological foot print. They are equestrians that prefer the country life style. Reducing the ecological foot print of all of the residents in Foxtrail makes sense.
Reducing everyone's ecological footprints makes sense - not only Foxtrail.
A very scary and important reminder. We need to treat our planet with respect. I wonder how many acres of land would be enough for each person if we all tried to be efficient. I don't think I will ever own 2741 acres! My little office where I administer Botox is only a few thousand square feet. I guess I will have to be as efficient as I can.
Thank you for your post. Yes, smoking is dangerous for your health, money and time, and should be avoided at all cost.
Quit smoking can be tremendously hard for smokers, that's why there are lots of professionals involved in this field : doctors, pharmacists, hypnotists, NLP practitioners, etc. Choose carefully which one suits your needs and consult with them.
Last but not least, perseverence is the key. So try the best to repel the urge of smoking again.

That's really interesting... I believe that the mind & hypnosis are powerful tools, and can help reduce smokers from polluting the environment, but there's more truth behind hypnosis than people expect.
Everybody is aging. But with the professional anti-aging solutions and resources provided in this website, you will certainly be able to slow down the tick of your biological clock!
This is an interesting concept. I have to wonder how he came up with this theory? Can you really tell that much about yourself with your foot? Overall I'm not sure about how accurate this is.
If we all pinched in just a little, we could all make a big difference. But there are other countries, like China that are growind so rapidly. I don't think they care much about our planet right now. There are so many more Chinese than there are people in the US. It will be very hard for our efforts to overcome their lack of effort.

The idea of an ecological foot print is very interesting. I doubt that many people think of their lives as having a "foot print." We tend to move forward and never look back at the damage that we have done. Great article. Digital Frames For Sale
you would think that more people would be aware of the impact that they have on the environment. we are so used to other people doing every thing for us we don't stop to think about how we affect our surroundings. Thanks for the thoughts. Cheap Bowling Balls
Very good article, well said. Although I believe there is a long way to go as far as awareness, I do believe people are starting to become more aware of this issue as it only continues to become more popular.
Just for the record, 1 hectare is equal to 2.471 acres.... not 2471 acres.
Other than that, I completely agree that we consume way to much energy shipping food and products all over the world when we should be consuming much more locally grown. There would be far fewer problems with food poisoning etc in addition to the energy savings.
Interesting article, and I agree we need to do our part to protect the environment. It's encouraging to hear somebody not just talking the talk but actually walking the walk. Thanks for the motivation.
